The heartburn myth
Growing up, I remember my mom taking and even giving me Prilosec when I claimed to have heartburn or a stomachache. I had no idea what this stuff was; all I knew is that it made me feel better after an hour or so. After reading about these little pills, I found they are simply screening the enzymes in my stomach wall that produces stomach acid A.K.A, “Proton-pump inhibitors”.
I’ve also realized that over time, if I continued to take these pills for heartburn, not only would I considerably increase my chance of a myocardial infarction (heart attack), but also these little pills could drastically lower my (already low) levels of B12 and magnesium significantly! (Not to mention the 52% chance higher risk of dementia I would be more likely to get. I can go without it.
Now that I know this, I am going to encourage my mother to do the same thing and replace these pills with something such as Aloe juice 5-10 minutes before her meal or simply boiling hot water and adding chamomile or fresh mint tea to ease an upset stomach she has. There are always ways around resorting/relying to these pills. I’m learning as I go through this program that there are many mistakes I’ve fallen to while growing up. It truly does make me much more appreciative of this program.
